Diet gastrectomy post surgery nutrition March 26, 2022

After the surgery, your stomach will not be able to fit as it was before surgery. You will need at least 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals as a dietary guidelines. This will help you eat the right amount of food, even if your stomach is smaller or deficient.
If you lose weight unintentionally, tell your doctor and your dietitian/nutritionist.

Lifelong vitamin supplementation as dietary guidelines

Nutritional deficiencies after blepharoplasty are common and depend on the type of surgery performed. The patients need essential nutrients for their recovery.

Protein

Preserve muscle tissue by eating protein-rich foods. Protein-rich foods include eggs, meat, fish, seafood, tuna, poultry, soy milk, tofu, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products. Your goal should be a minimum of 6575 grams of protein per day. Don’t worry if you don’t succeed in the first few months after surgery.

Supplements

You should take the following supplements every day to prevent nutritional deficiencies. Remember that all tablets should be crushed or cut into six or eight small pieces. You may not be able to absorb the whole pill like before the operation, and it may be difficult for the medicine to go through the new operation.

Multivitamin

Take a daily high potency multivitamin and mineral supplement containing at least 18 mg of iron, 400 mcg of folic acid, selenium, copper and zinc. Take two tablets daily for at least three months after surgery, then one daily for life.

Calcium Supplements

Take 1200 to 2000 mg of calcium daily to prevent calcium deficiency and bone disease. To improve absorption, take a calcium supplement two to three times a day, such as a 500 to 600 mg supplement by mouth three times a day.

Calcium citrate is the preferred form of calcium.

Vitamin D supplement

Take a total of 800 to 1000 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily. This total should be divided into doses of 400,500 IU twice daily. Vitamin D must be supplemented with calcium. If you wish, you can take a combination of calcium and vitamin D supplements to avoid taking multiple pills, as long as they contain the correct dosage.

Vitamin B12 Supplement

Can be taken in tablet or sublingual form.

Other supplements

Some patients need folic acid or iron supplements, especially menstruating women. Your dietitian will discuss this with you.

Diet process after bariatric surgery
Immediately after surgery, you will start with a clear liquid diet. You can gradually start adding thicker liquids to your diet after you leave the hospital. You can use liquid drinks or supplements that are high in protein (more than 20 grams of protein) and low in calories (less than 200 calories) to meet your protein needs during this time.
